„Can California Top Thesz-Leone Gate? Hugh Nichols says „Yes““
“That hundred and three thousand dollar gate last year when Lou Thesz and Baron Leone clashed for the world’s title, will continue to be a favorite topic of conversation until it is topped by some greater attraction. It would seem that this figure is likely to stand for a long time, especially since it hadn’t been surpassed in the last fifty years and only equalled twice. Hugh Nichols, matchmaker for the Hollywood Stadium, and one of the major factors in the development of Hollywood as the new Wrestling Capital of the World, says this figure will be reached again and even surpassed. However, Hugh modestly adds, if it happens again, it can only be in his home State of California. He offers some interesting reasoning for his optimism. Let’s hear some of it: “Sure, Thesz-Leone set a world’s record in gate receipts,” began Nichols, but we’ll never know what they would have drawn had the bout taken place in a larger Arena. Thousands were turned away that night due to lack of space. If they could all have found their way in, the gate might have reached $150,000.00. That’s one reason why I believe the 100,000 mark will be reached again and soon to. Only now are we beginning to realize what TV did by telecasting matches from the new Wrestling Capital of the World-Hollywood. It made tens of thousands of people wrestling conscious, people who never before had seen a wrestling match and who, in my opinion, would now flock to Hollywood to see a championship match as important as the Lou Thesz-Baron Leone affair turned out to be.” “Another reason for my optimism is that to draw that kind of money at the gate you have to have a challenger worthy of the name and one fans believe to have a fifty-fifty chance of lifting the title. We have the man right here in California - Wilbur Snyder. Many of you saw him on television in his match with champion Lou Thesz whom he held to a draw last winter. Watch him this season.” “World Champion Thesz is a great champion, in my estimation, possibly as good as any of the wrestlers of the past twenty-five years. Snyder has improved a hundred percent since his championship go in Hollywood, so everybody knows it would be a tough contest, with the challenger figured to have an even chance to win the title. That’s the kind of a match which, I believe, has that golden figure tagged to it.”
