County Court Judge Bill White sentenced the wrestler, who's real name is Steve Williams, to one year deferred adjudication and a one thousand dollar fine, and ordered him to attend family violence counseling courses and perform eighty hours of community service, after Austin pled no contest to charges that he beat his wife in their upscale San Antonio home last June.
Austin, 36, stood in court wearing a trim black suit and white shirt, his trademark shaved head bowed slightly as White read the charges against him. A no contest plea was entered on Austin's behalf by defense attorney Van Hilley, who worked out the plea agreement. Austin could have faced up to a year in the county jail if convicted of hitting Debra Williams on the head and back during a disagreement.
"It's been a chaotic few months," Austin told 1200 WOAI radio following the brief hearing. "I'm not a regular in the court system, so I'm glad to get it behind me."
Assistant Bexar County District Attorney Scott Simpson said the deal worked out by Austin is similar to other first time offenders facing similar misdemeanor charges.
"We feel very good about the plea. He took responsibility for what he did. Hopefully after he has completed his counseling, he'll learn that this is inappropriate behavior."
If Austin fulfills the terms of his strict probation, no guilty plea will be entered in his record.
"He can't pick up any more offenses," Simpson said. "He cannot demonstrate any aggressive behavior toward his wife. He can't drink alcohol. If he wants to leave the county, he has to get permission from the probation office through the judge."
Austin said he and his wife, who is also also a professional wrestler, are attempting a reconciliation.
Austin, who was dropped by World Wrestling Entertainment following this and other incidents this past spring, indicated a willingness to rejoin the circuit.
"I made my first personal appearance recently in Richmond Virginia and there were five thousand people there, so I feel I still have a lot of drawing power," Austin said.
Austin is given much of the credit for revitalizing professional wrestling in the mid nineties with his snarl, his larger than life personality, and his trademark slogan, 'that's the way it is, because Stone Cold says so!'
"Now that this is behind me, I can move on to everything else," he said. "This has been a drag."
