WWE To Undertake Eight International Tours in 2003
Asia, Africa, South America, Europe To Experience WWE Live Action
STAMFORD, Conn., October 17, 2002 -– World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. today announced its international live event tour schedule for 2003. The eight tours will cover five continents and include visits to countries such as Australia, Brazil, Chile, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa and Thailand.
The first tour for 2003 will be the “WWE Far East Tour January 2003.” Events will be held at the Jamsil Basketball Stadium in Seoul, South Korea on January 23, 2003, and the National Yoyogi Stadium (No. 1 Gymnasium), Tokyo on January 24 and 25, 2003.
Other tours tentatively scheduled for later in 2003 will be:
a February tour of South Africa, with stops in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town;
a May tour of South America with events in Chile and Brazil. An event will also be held in Mexico;
a June tour of Europe, with stops in France, Italy, Scotland and England;
a July tour of Asia, including events in Thailand and Japan;
an August tour of Australia, with events in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne;
an October tour of Europe, with events in Germany and the United Kingdom; and
a December tour of the Pacific Rim, with stops in Japan, Singapore and Australia.
“WWE will conduct almost double the live events in international markets in 2003 compared to 2002,” said Roger Marment, WWE’s Executive Vice President of International Business Development. “We could not undertake this type of international touring schedule without the brand extension that established two separate touring companies representing our RAW and SmackDown! television brands.”
WWE will conduct 15 international live events in 2002, culminating with a three-city tour of India in November 2002. The company expects to almost double that number of international events in 2003. By comparison, WWE held two international live events in 2001. Additional international touring helped to provide a 42% increase in international revenues in fiscal year 2002. Total international revenues for the fiscal year 2002 were $31.4 million.
In addition, new licensing agreements have been forged in the Pacific Rim and the United Kingdom as a result of interest piqued by expanded international touring, and the increasing international popularity of WWE television programming, which can be seen in more than130 countries. “Television and live events represent the backbone of our business and drive the success of our consumer product, home entertainment and wireless and digital initiatives,” said Marment. “Our licensing agents in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia are finding increased licensing and merchandising opportunities as companies see first-hand the loyalty and enthusiasm of the WWE fans in their countries.”
World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (NYSE: WWE) is an integrated media and entertainment company headquartered in Stamford, Conn., with offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto and London. Additional information on the company can be found at wwe.com and corporate.wwe.com.
