Jerry Lawler's Birthday Bash
Mid-South Coliseum
Report by: Craig Allen
I attended the "Night Fit For a King" show at the Mid-South Coliseum tonight...here are the results:
1) Derrick King & Big Bully Douglas defeated "Cadillac" Casey James & "Cowboy" Tony Falk. Tony Falk looks so much like Don Bass now-especially from the cheap seats where I was. I felt bad for Derrick, opening the card. King got the pin on Falk after a facebuster. Not that good.
2) Kristy Richy defeated One Dirty Babe to retain the XWF Women's Title. I had never heard of Kristy, but apparently I was the only one because she got a pretty good reaction. Maybe it was because Jimmy Hart was in her corner. Decent match. Kristy won after reversing a body press off the top from ODB. After the match, Tracy somebody from Canada ran in and challenged Kristy for the title sometime down the road. I had low expectations for this match (based on the awful interview Kristy did on TV today...) so it ended up being better than I thought it would be.
3) Reggie B. Fine defeated Koko B. Ware by DQ in a "Loser Wears a Chicken Suit Match" Pretty bad, as I expected. They brawled for a bit. Koko was eventually DQ'd for refusing to release a choke hold on Reggie. As they were seperating them, I had time to go to the concession stand, get a coke and come back to my seat and they were still pulling him off. Koko refused to wear the suit and stormed off.
4)Rock n Roll Express won a "Concession Stand Battle Royal" also involving The Moondogs, The Lifeguards, and Alan Steel & Mike Money. Mike Money is the new worst wrestling name ever. They had lots of concession stand plunder out there like popcorn and such. One of the Moondogs had a skillet hitting folks. Just a typical Memphis brawl. During the match I noticed Moondog Spot sitting in the corner. With 8 guys brawling it was hard to see everything, so I figured he was selling some weapon shot. But he just continued to sit there. Eventually the other Moondog rolled the Scaffold away from the ring. I didn't notice it at the time because I thought he was using it as a weapon. He was moving the Scaffold over to check on his partner. The match went to a finish seconds later (I missed it because of noticing something wasn't right with the Moondogs...) as the RnR Express were the Survivors. Everyone left ringside except The Moondogs and April, their manager. Security and medics rushed out. The announcers told everyone to stay in their seats and it wasn't part of the show. I could just tell this wasn't a work-and I don't know how to explain it but I just knew. Other wrestlers ran out. Everyone was rushing around so fast you could just tell it was real. Some fans heckled thinking it WAS part of the show, however. Soon the Moondog was loaded on a gurney and carried out very quickly as the audience applauded the medics efforts.
Before the intermission, the announcers stated that the Moondog WAS still breathing. At this point, I breathed a sigh of relief myself.
The East Coast Bad Boys were in the ring after an intermission. Doug Gilbert came out and attacked them, giving one a piledriver and cutting his hair. Brian Christopher came out and made the save. Challenges were issued and they were added to the main event making it Lawler & BC vs Mantell & Gilbert.
5) Corey Maclin & Short Dawg defeated Jimmy Hart & Low I.Q in a "Midget Challenge Match." Total comedy here. At one point Dawg and Corey did the Dudleys "Wassup" spot. Ended with Dawg splashing Hart for the win. Afterwards Hart and I.Q jumped special referee Midget P.
6) Kevin White defeated Bill Dundee in a "Scaffold Match." The Scaffold was like SO shaky. I was terrified watching them up there. Match didn't make any sense. They brawled around the ring and kept battling on the way up the scaffold. For a moment I was wondering if the rules were to see who could make it up there first or something. Eventually they got up there, then brawled back down again. Eventually all the lower card wrestlers came out and watched. They started brawling. White climbed the Scaffold and dove off on everyone. The bell sounded and they announced White as the winner since he was the first one to jump off the scaffold. HUH??? I thought whoever fell lost? First the hair shaving, then the chicken suit, now this? I would probably be really pissed off if I really cared about it that much.
7) Rocky Johnson battled Mabel to a No Contest in a Boxing/Wrestling Match. This was so bad. Dundee and Hart were with Mabel and Ricky Montana was in Johnson's corner. They went a couple of rounds then Mabel took off his gloves. Eventually Mabel was about to piledrive Johnson. Mo (Rob Harlem) came out and was about to help, but turned on Mabel and saved Johnson. Mo did a spinning kick to Mabel to one of the biggest pops of the night. Definitely woke me up as I had about went into a zombie stare by this point. I kept thinking about the Moondog as I'm sure everyone else was-fans and wrestlers alike. Ref through the match out.
8 ) Jerry Lawler & Brian Christopher defeated Dutch Mantell & Doug Gilbert. Jimmy Hart was in the Heel's corner and Jackie Fargo was in the faces. Match went over 20 minutes. In the end, Lawler hit Mantell with some object and got the pin. Heels jumped the faces for a bit afterwards but they made a comeback.
At the end of the show, the announcer said he hated to ruin the mood but he announced that Moondog Spot had passed away. They did a 10 Bell Salute to which the crowd gave a very respectful silence to. Brian Christopher said everyone loved Moondog Spot and said for everyone to pray for his family.
All in all not a good show as so many of the matches just didn't deliver, but who can really focus on that with what happened to the Moondog. As a big time Moondog fan I can say he will definitely be missed. Rest In Peace.
