Balk Estes Passes Away
I first saw Balk Estes when he was the promoter in Hammond Indiana in the early 1940's. I was little over two years old. He always had a cigar in his mouth and loved to play poker. Balk would visit our home in Hammond Indiana with his wife Arladene and three children, Butch the older and the twins. The twins were always together and strangely enough developed and spoke their own language.
Balk remained a friend of our family and came to Amarillo as the booker working for my father, Dory Funk Sr. Balk was instrumental in bringing Chief Wahoo McDaniel to the Amarillo Territory. I used to travel to the towns with Balk Estes and listen to him philosophize about the wrestling business. He would puff his cigar while driving on the open roads between Amarillo and Albuquerque and talk on. One of his philosophies was if every body in the wrestling business is knocking somebody, there must be something good about that person. Balk would have thought highly of John Lafield Bradshaw.
In his wrestling days, Balk Estes Was the master of the Alligator Clutch. It was a unique hold whereby Balk would grab both wrists of his opponent and work his way back through their legs. Once behind he would pull hard on the wrists and lift up. His opponent would flip forward and land shoulders on the mat with feet blocked by Balk’s legs. They would be trapped for a pin fall. Balk's winning position is much like that of the Pat O’Connor Roll up however Balk would be on top still holding his opponents wrists.
It has been a long time, many years since I have seen or spoken to this good friend however he stayed in touch with my mother, Dorothy Funk Culver in Amarillo until the last year.
The wrestling business has lost another original legend. May he rest in peace.
