Professional wrestler Chris Benoit met with his personal physician hours before he allegedly killed his wife and son and then hanged himself in his basement, the doctor said Wednesday.

"He was in my office on Friday to stop by just to see my staff," said Dr. Phil Astin of metro Atlanta. "He certainly didn't show any signs of any distress or rage or anything."

Authorities say Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his 7-year-old son Daniel and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with a weight-machine pulley over the weekend. No motive was offered for the killings, which were spread out over the weekend and discovered Monday.

Astin, who said he was Benoit's longtime friend and physician, said he had prescribed testosterone to Benoit because he suffered from low amounts of the hormone. He said the condition likely originated from previous steroid use. He would not say what, if any, medications he prescribed the day of the meeting.

"I'm still very surprised and shocked, especially with his child Daniel involved," said Benoit. "He worshipped his child."

Investigators said Benoit's 43-year-old wife was strangled Friday with what appeared to be a cable in an upstairs family room, and her feet and wrists were bound and there was blood under her head, indicating a possible struggle. Daniel was probably killed late Saturday or early Sunday, and his body was found in his bed, the district attorney said.

Before the killings, the family was struggling with how to care for the child, who suffered from a rare medical condition called Fragile X Syndrome, an inherited form of mental retardation often accompanied by autism, said Jerry McDevitt, an attorney for World Wrestling Entertainment.

"Him and Nancy were clearly struggling about this whole issue, about how to take care of Daniel," said McDevitt.

"I don't know what he confronted when he went back into the house," he said. "No one really knows that. We'll have to see. Clearly this issue of the son was a stressor on both of their relationships for some time."

District Attorney Scott Ballard said the autopsy indicated that there were no bruise marks on his neck, so authorities are now assuming he could have been killed using a choke hold. "It's a process of elimination," he said.

Anabolic steroids were found in Benoit's home, leading officials to wonder whether the drugs may have caused the muscle man nicknamed the "Canadian Crippler" to kill his wife and child and then himself.

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., issued a news release Tuesday evening saying steroids "were not and could not be related to the cause of death" and that the findings indicate "deliberation, not rage." It also added that Benoit tested negative April 10, the last time he was tested for drugs.

"The drugs they had found in there, including the steroids, were all pursuant to legitimate prescription. We know they know which doctor prescribed it," McDevitt said. "There's no question, none of these drugs are out there, none of these drugs came from Internet pharmacies."

While steroids can cause the paranoia and explosive outbursts known as "roid rage," the drug is also associated with deep and lengthy bouts of depression.

"Just as you have the extreme high of when you're on steroids, you can get the opposite," said Dr. Todd Schlifstein, a clinical assistant professor at the New York University School of Medicine. "You can have a dramatic difference in mood swings. You can feel there's no hope, there's no future."

In November 2005, 38-year-old professional wrestler Eddie Guerrero died in a Minneapolis hotel room due to what a coroner later ruled as heart disease, complicated by an enlarged heart resulting from a history of anabolic steroid use.

In the aftermath of that tragedy, WWE chairman Vince McMahon announced a new drug policy, one that would give "no special consideration" to anyone and would involve frequent, random drug tests performed by an independent agency.

In the wake of this past weekend's murder/suicide case, in which steroids were found in the home of pro wrestler Chris Benoit, one has to wonder just how well the WWE's new policy is working.

If steroids are common in pro baseball and football, then the drugs are rampant in pro wrestling, which places an enormous emphasis on the size of its athletes. Former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura admitted to using steroids when he was in the WWE and Hulk Hogan has admitted to taking steroids for 13 years. In 1993, McMahon was charged with conspiring to distribute steroids to his wrestlers, one of whom testified that McMahon had directed him to use steroids. McMahon was acquitted by a jury in U.S. District Court the following year.

Moreover, Bruno Sammartino refused to be inducted into the wrestling hall of fame in 2005 because he believed wrestlers were pumping themselves with steroids. More recently, a story by SI.com reporters revealed that former WWE champion Kurt Angle and other wrestlers allegedly received a wide variety of anabolic steroids supplied by Applied, the Mobile, Ala., compounding pharmacy that was raided last fall by investigators.

Of course, in wrestling, steroids are just the tip of the iceberg. While telecasts of Monday Night Raw or Friday Night Smackdown might give the impression that these athletes only work one or two days per week, the reality is that most are out there for five or six days. They perform high risk maneuvers, sometimes crashing through tables and taking steel chairs to their foreheads.

In the 1999 documentary Beyond The Mat, the wrestler known as Triple H was seen walking up the ramp following a particularly brutal match. As soon as he disappeared behind the curtain, a chiropractor grabbed him, strapped him to a bed and pushed each of his vertebrae back into place. To do so the chiropractor had to push his feet against the wall to apply enough pressure to realign the wrestler's back. Needless to say, there is some pain there.

And when Tylenol doesn't do the trick for pain relief, some wrestlers switch to a stronger drug -- and the results are often disastrous. In 1997, Brian Pillman was found dead amidst a sea of empty bottles of prescription painkillers. In 2003, Curt "Mr. Perfect" Hennig died of a cocaine overdose. Guerrero, who had a long history of drug abuse, was using narcotic painkillers. The list goes on and on.

That's why McMahon's declarations of cleaning up the sport seem to be about as genuine as O.J.'s quest to find the real killer. Size sells, and until people tire of seeing 300-pound men being choked and slammed through tables, steroids will continue to be readily available to professional wrestlers. Unless, of course, McMahon is forced to take stiffer action.

His three-hour "tribute" to Benoit on Monday night was a travesty. I can't speak to the man Chris Benoit was before last weekend, but the man he finished as was a murderer who took his wife away from her family and his 7-year-old son away from the world. If Congress -- which has involved itself in the fight against steroid abuse before -- is looking for something to do, there is a billion dollar industry with an enormous fan base that needs fixing.

Call professional wrestling sports or call it entertainment, but whatever you call it, realize that people are dying in it. They are dying because they believe bigger muscles lead to bigger paychecks. But no one is telling them that they can't spend a nickel of it if they are dead.

Lex Luger Talks About Chris Benoit

Former professional wrestler Lex Luger who lives in the Metro Atlanta area told 11Alive News Wednesday that he is shocked and saddened by the death of Chris Benoit.

Police said Benoit killed himself after strangling his wife and smothering his 7-year-old son inside their Fayetteville home this past weekend.

Benoit and Luger were aquainted through wrestling but Luger told 11Alive's Valerie Hoff that the two had not seen each other in some time.

Luger said alcohol and drugs, including steroids, wreaked havoc on his own life for years before a jail chaplain converted him to Christianity. He said he believes it is possible steroid use played a part in the Benoit family tragedy.

"Obviously, they were in his home. Let's face it. There's a pretty good chance he was on them and to discount that they didn't play a role, as far as with his temperament, I'd be lying if I said there wasn't that possibility," Luger told 11Alive's Valerie Hoff.

Luger is now a fitness and nutrition coach in Cobb County.

Er sagt auch, dass er es für möglich hält, dass Steroide im Benoit-Drama eine Rolle gespielt haben könnte.

So jetzt kann ich auch mal was dazu sagen. Mein Internet Anschluss ist seit letzter Woche wieder mal defekt und ich hab deshalb recht wenig mitbekommen. Bis ich gestern in der Krone Zeitung im Sportteil einen Artikel sehe, wonach der Wrestler Chris Benoit seine Frau und seinen Sohn umgebracht haben soll. Ich war geschockt und konnte nicht fassen was ich da las, heute stand in der Krone wieder ein Artikel der den Mord von Benoit an seine Frau und seinen Sohn bestätigte. In dem Bericht stand auch, dass Steroide spontane Wutausbrüche hervorrufen können und das vielleicht auch ein Grund für die Tat war. Heute konnte ich mir erst ein Bild von der ganzen Sache machen und ich kann es einfach nicht verstehen, Benoit wirkte auf mich immer ausgeglichen, bodenständig, einfach jemand der das Buisniss respektiert und ein großer Teil davon ist. Doch man kann nie in einen Menschen hineinsehen, dass bestätigt auch diese Tat. Ich bin mir sicher, dass Benoit schon länger große mentale Probleme plagten und fast keiner davon wusste(außer Regal vielleicht) und er auch keinen hatte mit dem er über seine Probleme reden konnte. Für mich ist es auch ein wenig unverständlich, dass keinen von der Führungsetage bei WWE was am Verhalten von Benoit aufgefallen ist, normalerweise sieht man es doch jemanden an wenn er nicht gut drauf ist. Ich war immer ein Fan von Benoit und seinen super Matches, schon zu ECW und WCW-Zeiten. Sein Titlegewinn war die Krönung in seiner Karriere und ich erinnere mich immer gerne daran zurück, doch jetzt wird er den meisten aufgrund seiner schrecklichen Tat in Erinnerung bleiben. Entweder Benoit war schon längere Zeit psychisch kaputt was aber dann irgendwie keiner merkte, was ich für unwahrscheinlich halte oder Benoit muss irgendwas intus gehabt haben, denn sonst kann man nicht so einfach seine Frau und seinen Sohn umbringen.

@ossyac: Natuerlich ist die WWE Wellness Policy nicht ernst zunehmen. Es steht sogar in den Regeln der Wellness Policy das ein Wrestler alles nehmen kann, solange es von einem Arzt verschrieben wurde. Und es ist kein Problem das zu uebergehen, weil irgendwo findet man immer einen Arzt, der einem etwas verschreibt. Ganz abgesehen davon das jeder WWEler nur drei-viermal im Jahr getestet wird, was ja der eigentliche Witz ist.Mit anderen Worten, WWE sagt das Chris Benoit im April negativ getestet wurde. Das mag ja stimmen, aber das heisst nicht das Chris Benoit im April clean war!

Die Diskussion um die Steroide geht mir von den Medien sowieso mittlerweile auf die nerven, viel entscheidender fuer mich sind da die Medikamente die Chris Benoit offenbar in seinem Haus hatte. Wie die Polizei sagte, in Benoit`s Haus wurden jede Menge verschreibungspflichtige Medikamente gefunden. Da muesste man mal nachfragen, nicht sich auf die Steroide einschiessen, nein die Medikamente die er von Aerzten bekam! Wieso hatte er denn soviele verschreibungspflichtige Medikamente? Das ist doch die Frage die man stellen muss, und nicht: Wurde er im April negativ getetest auf Steroide? Ich meine selbst Stevie Wonder koennte bestaetigen das Chris Benoit seit 10 Jahren auf Roids war, das ist keine Neuigkeit.

We do urine and blood tests to determine as well as test the cardio aspect of things to test for heart disease and heart failure. It’s a comprehensive test. The last test he took of a random nature was in April and it was totally negative. That doesn’t mean he was not taking prescription medication or steroids when this happened. We don’t know.”

Well, there’s no need to wait until we have our heads wrapped around this, because I doubt that’ll happen, so here it is. I know that a monster committed those terrible, unforgivable acts of horror. Just like everyone who knew Chris Benoit, I can’t think of him as a monster. Not Chris.

Chris was truly a role model’s role model. You simply had to respect him and admire his focus and unmatched discipline. If I ever got asked a question about who I looked up to the most in the business, you guessed it. That’s me sharing a real feeling with you. Not talking about bull shit that I have little interest in, like who would I like most to wrestle with, or what’s my favorite color, but who I actually looked up to in the dressing room. It’s Chris Benoit- in the ring and in the dressing room and with his family.

The last time I talked to Chris, a few weeks ago, he told me how much he respected me for stepping away from the business. His message now comes to me from beyond. He said “Some of us don’t know when to get out.” I told him that I always held a little contempt for him telling me back in 1992 that I was a dumb-ass for wanting to quit WCW, and mentioned the irony.

Over the last several years, on overseas tours I’d always see Chris in the gym when the other guys were recovering from the night before. He’d train hard and sometimes I’d see him allowing young wrestlers to follow his lead and get a guaranteed killer workout. He took pride in what he did and set a great example for others, myself included, to follow.

How many murderers…baby murderers at that… are praised so highly by EVERYONE who knew them? This is all so bizarre and new information seems to come out every few hours but I can’t imagine we’ll ever understand what happened here. It appears that Chris took the answers with him. To tell you the honest truth, the easiest thing for me to believe at this moment is that if no frame work was involved, he was taken over by demonic energies with no compassion. I have to believe this is often the case with such inhumane acts.

Nancy, Daniel and Chris’ tragic deaths obviously have affected a lot of people. Just remember, there’s enough hate in this world. Hateful thoughts do not move us in the right direction, so make a conscious effort to remember that. It’s important now and always.

I had planned on starting off talking about a recent trip to an arena football game, but I would be remiss not to address the Chris Benoit situation. Everyone who knew anything about wrestling knew of his in-ring contributions. I truly don't know what I can say and not get in trouble with the WWE. Anyone who reads my blogs regularly knows how much I love wrestling, and being part of the WWE. But I think what I have to say is more important. His son, Daniel, came to many shows. We bonded. He a was a cute little boy. What Chris did was selfish and hurtful. I fear that him being a superstar in some way glamorizes the situation. That's not what suicide is. It is selfish and hurtful. As long as you have a breath to breathe, you can make change to improve your life. You can talk to family, or friends, or clergy. And if you're not comfortable with any of them, here are two phone numbers for a Suicide and Crisis Hotline. 1-800-784-2433 (1-800-SUICIDE) or 1-800-273-8255 (1-800-273-TALK). They take calls 24/7. You always have options. Maybe someday I'll be able to forgive Chris, but not today.

I haven't always agreed with every decision Vince McMahon has made, but I do agree with everything he's done dealing with this situation thus far. Out of respect for the sudden death of Benoit's family and his contributions to the business, I think Vince did the right thing by canceling the scheduled Raw. When the decision was made to make Raw a Chris Benoit tribute show, the WWE was only doing what seemed respectful and right at that time. When more information was discovered, the WWE took a different and appropriate stance towards their programming. The ECW and Smackdown shows this week were dedicated to our great fans. Wrestling fans who were grieving and confused over this tragedy needed us, including me, to entertain them. I feel it is my responsibility, as well as my pleasure, to put smiles on people's faces and give them an escape from reality. I know Vince feels that way as well.

Chris Benoit was always kind, considerate, and professional when I interacted with him. Like everyone else, I was shocked when everything came out. I can't believe Chris Benoit and his wife and child are dead as I type this. As of now, all of the strange pieces of this puzzle haven't been put together yet. My thoughts and prayers go out to Benoit's other two children as well as the immediate family and friends of the deceased. More than anything, I feel terrible for little Daniel--he was as innocent as any human being could possibly be. This is a terrible and sad tragedy.

I am very disappointed with how many media outlets are lapping the entire population of professional wrestlers into this situation. There are many outstanding, wonderful people that do so many great things for the world that I work and wrestle with. It's not fair or accurate.

Tell the people you love that you love them, and never lose sight of what's really important in life. We may not ever understand why this tragedy happened, but we have to learn from it. Stay strong--life is too precious and too short. I have much more I want to say about the activities of the last few days. If it's appropriate, I definitely will. The National Fragile X Foundation Responds to Death of Wrestler Chris Benoit and His Family

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., June 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Fragile X Foundation shares in the sorrow surrounding the death of wrestler Chris Benoit and his wife and son. Early reports indicate that the son had fragile X syndrome, the world's leading cause of inherited intellectual disability, and that Mr. Benoit may have been depressed over that fact.
