@nef

Zitat: It's time for WWE to toughen stance against drugs
By Byron Robinson
The professional wrestling world is still in shock after World Wrestling Entertainment star Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and their 7-year-old son, Daniel, were found dead at their home in suburban Atlanta on Monday.
Benoit took his own life after killing his wife and son.
After anabolic steroids were found in the home, many wonder if the horrific acts were a result of "roid rage."
During Thursday's "Today" show on NBC, WWE owner Vince McMahon urged people not to draw conclusions.
"Steroids may or may not have had anything to do with this," McMahon said. "It's all speculation until the toxicology reports come back."
The WWE announced earlier this week that Benoit passed his last drug test in April as part of the company's "Wellness Program."
Until the chemical tests come out, the speculation will continue.
Whether or not results indicate Benoit had drugs in his system, there are other factors to consider.
There are the rigors of a 250-to-300-day schedule -- constant traveling, the wear and tear on the body three or four days a week, and numerous press and public relations responsibilities -- and balancing that with family life.
We may never know what drove Benoit, who many considered to be a guy who had his act together in and out of the ring, over the edge.
But one thing is certain: If this incident isn't a wake-up call for the WWE and wrestling promoters in general to change how business is operated, then there's no hope.
Some thought the wake-up call occurred two years ago when WWE star Eddie Guerrero died of heart failure. Although Guerrero had been drug free for four years, his past substance abuse contributed to his death.
The WWE implemented a "Wellness Program" in February 2006. Under the policy, random drug testing is conducted by an independent corporation. For testing positive the first time, a wrestler is suspended 30 days without pay. A second positive test results in a 60-day suspension without pay, and a third positive test results in termination.
Current and former wrestlers appeared on various cable news shows this past week supporting the "Wellness Program."
In an Associated Press report by Paul Newberry, former WWE talent Lance Storm and journalist Bryan Alvarez of Figure Four Weekly newsletter say there are a couple of flaws in the program:
A wrestler can pass the doping test with a testosterone to epitestosterone ratio of 10:1, more than double the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) standard. Under the agency's rules, athletes are in violation starting at 4:1. The average ratio is 1:1.
A wrestler who tests positive can be excused if he produces a doctor's prescription and a medically justified reason for taking the drug in question.
Because of the frequency of pro wrestling deaths in recent years, the WWE, the largest pro wrestling company in the world, must lead the charge in taking a more aggressive stance against drugs. The tests should be more stringent and enforced by the letter of the law. Instead of a three-strikes-and-you're-out policy, how about two strikes.
And the changes in the "Wellness Program" shouldn't end with drugs.
With the brutal blows that wrestlers take over a period of time, regular cardiovascular and neurological tests should be administered to monitor the talents' heart and brain conditions.
And to take it one step further, a staff of psychologists or counselors should be on call to help wrestlers who are having problems in their professional or personal lives.
As far as in-ring changes, instead of pushing muscle-bound guys who don't know a wristlock from a wristwatch, subliminally encouraging talent to use illegal substances to get that perfect physical look, spotlight talent for their in-ring ability and natural charisma, no matter what size they are.
Also, to alleviate the mental and physical struggles that the talent endures, have a rotating schedule where a group of stars take a break for a period of time and when they return, another group gets time off.
Each day, more news on the Benoit case will come out, and the information could be more disturbing than it already has been.
This is ample time for McMahon and the WWE to step up and say the tragedies stop now.
It'll be interesting to see if the company continues to take a defensive position or be proactive in attempting to solve the problem.
Taking a slogan from the WWE, "the world is watching" from here on out how the company handles the negative media attention as well as the problems that have plagued the industry for many years.

Zitat:Classic wrestler mad that 'sport' has lost its class
True confession: I am a recovering pro wrestling fan.
My favorite athlete growing up was a faker, but it didn't matter. Jack Brisco was Clark Kent in tights.
That's why my hand shook as I called him the other day. I wanted to get his thoughts on World Wrestling Entertainment.
"I don't like it," he said. "I don't watch it."
My hero.
Now everybody is looking at WWE after the murder-suicide of Chris Benoit and his family. They're discovering Vince McMahon's freak show isn't just harmless schlock. Wrestlers are dying at alarming rates, though nobody cared enough to get alarmed until last week.
When McMahon came to City Hall in March to announce next spring's WrestleMania 24, it was all hoorah and handshakes and jokes about Ashley the Dirty Diva's silicone anatomy. Yes, it's all fun and games until a superstar kills his wife and son and then hangs himself.
Now the Benoit story has become Natalee Holloway on steroids. Just don't say that word around McMahon. He insists steroids aren't to blame, and the media feeding frenzy is totally uncalled for.
Poor Vince. He reportedly lost $21 million as WWE stock plummeted last week. He lost a star performer. At least he hasn't lost his shame.
Of course, how do you lose what you've never had? McMahon long ago turned pro wrestling into a pimped-out joke.
Sure, rasslin' was always a charade. But if you ever saw Championship Wrestling from Florida, you know it was honorable fakery. Wrestlers actually knew how to wrestle. The women didn't all look and act like porn stars.
For a kid in the '70s, there was no better way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Gordon Solie was wrestling's Walter Cronkite.
The WWE is Paris Hilton. Paris gets ratings, of course, and McMahon has turned America's appetite for drivel into a billion-dollar business.
That doesn't mean we have to like it. Would the great Jack Brisco make it in today's rasslin' world?
"I wouldn't be employed," he laughed.
He was at his auto repair shop in Tampa. It's hard to believe the king of the Figure Four Leg Lock is 65. Brisco got into wrestling because he could wrestle, not because he could preen.
"We had a lot more real athletes with amateur backgrounds," he said.
Brisco weighed 200 pounds when he started in 1965. He hit the gym and started a diet heavy on potatoes and beer. All that, and he still never got heavier than 235 pounds.
McMahon would have looked at him and laughed. Though wrestling pre-Vince has one advantage.
"The guys in my era are still alive," Brisco said.
By one account, 55 wrestlers under the age of 45 have died since 1985. Congress would shut down the circus if that many elephants dropped. But Benoit, Rick Rude, Eddie Guerrero and all others were people, not just WWE characters.
Each death had different factors, from drug abuse to mental breakdowns. But if you believe steroids aren't rampant, you probably also believe Paris Hilton is a virgin and pro wrestling isn't fake.
Naturally, McMahon wants to move ahead and begin "the healing process." We'll know he's serious if wrestlers start looking more like Brisco than Bluto.
Don't count on that. I just feel sorry for any kid brought up watching today's wrestling, assuming their parents are irresponsible enough to let them.
I at least got to reminisce with my childhood hero.
If somebody tries to call one of McMahon's stars in 30 years, there won't be anybody around to answer the phone.

Chris Benoit was a "delusional juice freak" who chased the dark side and had trouble distinguishing between his fictional character and reality, says the man who started him out in professional wrestling.
"The last time I saw him he was in pretty rough shape mentally," said Bruce Hart, son of the legendary Stu Hart. "I didn't know all the details but I knew it wasn't good. I was not at all shocked (by what happened).
"If I could see and determine that in a few visits, how the hell could they (World Wrestling Entertainment) not have known something was wrong? (In my opinion) I think the WWE needs to re-evaluate what it is doing here."
Hart will not simplify the shocking murder of Benoit's wife and 7-year-old son or the eventual suicide of the wrestler by attributing it only to steroid usage. But he truly believes that steroid abuse, in combination with delusional behaviour, painkillers and failing health -- "almost all the people we started out with (who did steroids) began breaking down around 40," Hart said -- is a deadly cocktail that needs to be further examined.
"I've known too many wrestlers who couldn't separate the character they play on television from their real life," said Hart, who has wrestled professionally, promoted wrestling and trained wrestlers all his life.
"Wrestlers start believing their press clippings and what is said on television. It's like an actor leaving the set but still playing the part. There's a delusional element to this. I've seen it over and over again. Some people can't separate the character from real life, and Chris was one of those people.
"From my experience, that has been quite prevalent with wrestlers and that becomes exacerbated by steroids, drugs, painkillers and failing health."
They hadn't seen each other much over the past few years, with Hart still in Calgary and Benoit working the circuit. "We saw each other mostly at funerals," Hart said. "At my brother's (Owen), my dad's, my brother-in-law's (Davey Boy Smith). Not that long ago I was talking to Hillbilly Jim and we were reminiscing a little. I told him I was worried about Chris."
While the WWE has a drug-testing policy, Hart believes they should bring in psychologists and physicians to evaluate not only their drug-testing procedures but how they treat their athletes, deal with them, and the toll their gimmicks take on the lives of their performers.
"Imagine if Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Mark Messier were all dead in their 40s. Imagine what the reaction would be?" Hart asked. "There would be investigations and more investigations. Wouldn't people want to know what happened and why?"
Hart was also deeply angered that the WWE aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit on Monday night.
"I kept hearing 'He was a nice guy, a great guy' and I knew him when he was a kid. But all I know now is he's a murderer," Hart said. In my opinion, "for them to do a tribute show was disgraceful."
Officials at WWE Canada refused to comment yesterday.
WWE owner Vince McMahon told NBC Today Show viewers yesterday that "steroids may or may not have had anything to do with this. It's all speculation until the toxicology reports come back."
Hart did wonder if Benoit had been given an unfavourable medical report, which may been another factor in his violent behaviour. "A lot of the steroid users start getting liver and kidney problems around the age of 40," Hart said. "There are a lot of wrestlers out there who are dead that you never heard about whose bodies broke down. I've known others who had looming health issues and went a little crazy. Maybe this caused him to go off."
